K2 is in the northeast corner of Pakistan, about 70 miles from Skardu.

Welcome to Skardu, Pakistan. You’re still a two-week trek away from the mountain. But in 1953, all roads stopped here. You have more than two tons of supplies to haul along narrow ledges high over rushing streams. You’re going to need help—90 porters to be exact, hauling 60 pounds each.
